About Lower Swell

The picturesque hamlet of Lower Swell lies amongst some of England's finest natural countryside where in the hedgerows alongside fragrant wild plants and flowers you can see ancient moss-covered Milestones. These, if we could read them, would quite possibly tell us that we are just a short way from Stow-on-the-Wold - a beautiful old town at the highest point of the Cotswolds, and within easy reach of Stratford-on-Avon, and the dreamy spires of Oxford.

One of the hamlet's focal points is the stunning War Memorial standing on the tranquil village green. Close by the silvery waters of the River Dickler flow past cottages of mellow Cotswold stone with a blaze of autumnal foliage over walls towards little dormer windows. Peering around it is all so tranquil, so very English, and you could almost imagine yourself light years away when all that disturbed the peace was the clip-clop of a horse as it drew a stately carriage on a round of calls, or a family to church.

The church here is dedicated to St.Mary the Virgin. This is a stone building whose origins are firmly rooted in Norman times. Latterly there are 19th century alterations but none detracts from the overall beauty. Inside the church the eye is immediately drawn to the magnificent stained glass through which the sun filters its rays onto the worn stone floors. There is a fine stone font with cover, gleaming woodwork, and several memorials. In the lawned churchyard visitors can see graves belonging to former residents of Lower Swell.

Lower Swell is a place to leave your car, take a gentle walk and savour the timeless charm and peaceful atmosphere.
